I have joined the ranks of HD today...

and my god, does is freaking rule.

Too bad no broadcast shows are on this weekend. The DEN/OAK game on ESPN is unfreaking believeable.

I got the Mitsubishi WS-55315, btw.

Derrich11-28-04 08:56 PM

I'm taking the plunge in a couple of weeks (merry christmas to me.) But I still have some questions. Are you getting the HD signal through the cable box? And if so, did you need a special box or just the regular one? Did you have to give up Tivo?

D

Deftones11-28-04 09:25 PM

I have DirecTv. I had to buy a new receiver for the HD stuff. I have a DirecTivo hooked up to my new tv as well, so there's two receivers hooked up.

You will need a box that is capable of receiving HD signals or an HD source. If you do cable, most likely you'll need a new box from your cable provider.

nazz11-28-04 09:28 PM

Congrats!

I have a Mits WS-65819 with a similar setup (Hughes DirecTivo and a Zenith HD receiver).

About f*cking time! :)

Pretty much all of the sports look awesome on HD. Primetime network shows are good in widescreen HD, but the sports are still the bomb!

congrats!! i am currently watching the game on espn and it does look great! discovery hd theater is great as well. and hdnet on monday nights with bikini destinations.

My three-month-old has de-railed my mission to get HDTV in the house before 2005. The Sony 34XBR960 (or the 34XS955) is a thing of beauty and would look fan-freakin-tastic in my living room.

:(

I watched the game on my HDTV also, too bad Denver lost. I believe this was the 1st time I have ever seen them lose during a snow storm.

Chew11-29-04 06:01 AM

I saw my first example of local HD channels on cable over the weekend at my uncles house. The unfiltered, uncompressed OTA HD I have at my house blows cable out of the water.

If you ever have the choice, go the OTA route. :D

Deftones11-29-04 08:33 AM

I do have an OTA antenna. The problem is I couldn't get it to receive channels w/o artifacts at all worth a damn last night. Part of it could have been the inclement weather. I am going to screw around with placement and position tonight and tomorrow. If I can't get it right, I am going to try another antenna.

Both are great sets and top of the line for HD CRT's.
I got the 955 since it was $500 less then the 960. Both have the same tube and same PQ. The 960 has PIP and adjustable DRC but that's about the only difference.

If you can swing it, do not hesitate.

HD does rock! IMO, CSI Miami delivers the single best HD broadcast of the major network shows. But virtually anything in HD looks great!

I have really thought about the 955 because of the price difference. I am going to see if there is a way to swing a deal for it over the next year, but it really depends on how things go w/ my job situation. I would have to buy a new dvd player since I am still using my original Sony that I received for my b-day in the summer of '99 (knock on wood), but those don't cost near as much now. One of those 34" would be perfect, and then I could move the 27" Trinitron and the dvd player to the master bedroom (much to the chagrin of the wife).

That's what I had to do. I was still using my Sony DVD player from early 2000 that cost me around $450. It didn't even have Prograssive Scan or component connections, and would not play music CD's that I burned myself. I bought a new Sony for $120 and between that and the new TV, the picture is far superior to what I had.

Yup, that's what I did.

If you can swing it, go DLP, you will not be disappointed. I friggin' love mine. Amazing picture.

Roto11-29-04 05:43 PM

I just got a new HD DVR cable box last week (Motorola 6412). I can't wait to record Lost! I've been watching it live up until now so I could watch it on my projector. Las Vegas is on tonight, that's worthwhile viewing :D

DLP is great, but I wish the prices would go down so they would get rid of the colorwheel. Mine likes to get noisy and it seems to be a common problem after you've had it a while. I will have had my Infocus X1 for a couple of years at the end of December.

Oooo...the 6412 is the two tuner box right?

I have the 6208 which is fine if I want to watch a program in HD or record a program via the DVR in HD, but...I currently can not watch one program in HD and simultaneously record another program in HD.

I assume the 6412 would allow me to do that?
Gotta give Comcast a call and see if they are available yet in my area.

Roto11-29-04 06:38 PM

Yeah, the 6412 is the two tuner box. Seattle Comcast made us wait until those were available. We also go the new guide system from Microsoft. Way better than the TV Guide garbage! So far it's worked well and I won't have to worry about conflicts any more between that and my two Replays. I really don't like not having a 30 second skip button though  Fast forwarding is so 90s.

I did have one recording that came out bad. I think I was recording 2 HD programs at once. Rocky V had a bunch of artifacts for the first half hour. They were different than what I'd usually see with bad reception, so I'm sure it was the recording. It didn't make the movie any less watchable though :p All of the other recordings have been perfect, so I'm not sure exactly what the cause might have been.

Deftones11-29-04 11:11 PM

I just switched OTA antenna and now it's working like a champ. The piece of crap that I bought from BB was garbage. I got the Zenith Silver Sensor. The thing is cranking out the signal. It's a bit big and weird looking, but well worth it so far.

Roto11-29-04 11:20 PM

Radio Shack sells this one. If you thought the Silver Sensor was big and weird looking  I've read posts at avsforums that said it was better than the Silver Sensor for them.

I have a Silver Sensor too. I was surprised it worked at all since I live in the suburbs and there are hills all over. The only use I have for it now is for CBS and UPN since Comcast (the cable company) and Cox (the station owners) refuse to make a deal

MonkeyG11-29-04 11:27 PM

Congrats!

Now it's time to get Voom.

Naaaa. I'm happy w/ DirecTv. They've been good to me, and they have the MLB Direct Ticket, which I don't think you can get on Voom.

Are these indoor antennas?
I would consider one for UPN (Star Trek) use since my cable box does not deliver that channel in HD.

Roto, your Comcast does not deliver CBS to you in HD?
They do here in NY/NJ area.

BTW, my new 6412 arrives tomorrow morning.
Although looks like it's one day to late as for tonight I'll still have to record L&O SVU in HD and watch NYPD in regular broadcast. :(

Roto12-01-04 01:41 AM

Yes, the silver sensor and that Radio Shack one from the 50s are both indoor antennas. They should look great sitting on top of your high tech HDTV :D The Silver Sensor actually does look a lot better than the RS one.

Comcast and CBS finally ironed out their problems for all the CBS owned stations, but Cox Cable owns our CBS affiliate and strangely enough they don't seem to want to cooperate with Comcast :hscratch: Fortunately the Seahawks are in the NFC now so all their games are on Fox. I'm not into cop shows, so I'm not missing much on CBS HD.

I found out something interesting about the 6412 tonight. I set it up to record Rebel Billionaire and House which are both on Fox. While I was watching a basketball game it told me it was going to change the channel at 9:00 to record House even though it has two tuners  It was a close game and in the 4th quarter so I just watched the rest of the game on my Replay TV. When I watched the shows after the game and figured out what happened is that it automatically pads the recordings by a minute or two on each end. So it used both tuners to record from 8:59 to 9:01. Turned out to be an inconvenience in this case, but I like the thinking behind it. Screw you ABC and NBC! HA!

Patrick G12-01-04 03:20 AM

I've been waiting a year to wait another year to buy my HDTV :D The next generation DLP sets are going to be just about perfect. They should reduce the rainbow effect to just-about-undetectable, which will make DLP the shiznit. I'll be buying a 60-incher as soon as they come out at the end of 2005 or 2006.

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 09:53 AM.
